INTRO

Elaine Tian is a Brooklyn-based painter and ceramic artist. Her non-representative paintings, often inspired by the Australian landscape, explore her long-time interest in abstraction and mark-making. Much of her work pays homage to the Southern continent in which she was raised. Land, sky, and sea are examined through spontaneous marks, and expressed by abstract drips, lines and distressed layers of oil, pastel, and graphite.

Elaine studied at The College of Fine Arts in Sydney, then pursued her Masters in Design at The University of New South Wales. Upon graduating college, she worked as a designer in the magazine publishing industry for several years before moving to New York.

CERAMICS

Under the Studio Joo brand, Elaine makes tableware and light fixtures, primarily out of porcelain. Her ceramic work is a cross section of her sculpture (form/materials), design (function), and painting (mark-making) backgrounds.

The brand is inspired by wabi-sabi, the traditional Japanese aesthetic of imperfection and transience.

Ceramics enables Elaine to deepen her interest in food and interior design. Her work can been seen in boutique stores in New York, San Francisco, Aspen, Berlin, and Sydney. A full list of stockists can been seen here.
